It has a very warm low-end with very crisp highs.
I've used a handful of sound hole, suction cup, clip on, and piezo pickups over the years and this one proves to be one of the best. I've got a lovely little studio valve combo - I've NEVER thought of using it to amplify my acoustics - it's just not for that. just looked up the Hell x thingy - wtf - overkill for an acoustic - if ya want an approximation of a reasonable acoustic sound it's gotta come from the 'transducer' and piezo just wont do - quack quack. Actually used the B string on my EB Ray 35. Also lessens the finger noise and the piezo "quack" on this guitar. Awesome thump and short sustain for a very acoustic like tone. Put these on my Godin A4 I use in small settings and on jazz/folk/country tunes. But as a performance guitar with very little fuss, it does an affordable, solid job The Route 61 CE isn't going to be for everyone: its heartland is onstage or in the rehearsal room rather than the sofa. The tonal balance faithfully mirrors the acoustic sound, and while we were expecting some of that dreaded piezo quack, it was kept to a minimum. Maybe a circular topic with no exact scientific solution possible, but it seems that every bass player knows what is meant by the infamous phrase "piezo quack" - that sound that comes from a variety of piezo pickups when one or more notes seems to have an electronic wolf tone (given the subject matter, maybe we should call it a duck tone?).

With 18 volts, your signal has more headroom so hard strumming or plucking won't distort into piezo "quack" as easily. The 18-volt preamp is powered by two "AA" batteries.When I first listened to it, I preferred the core, but now I actually think I prefer the SE, especially through the amp (which seems to clean up the quack). I hear a little bit of Piezo quack in the SE in the first recording, but the core sounds a bit muffled to me, too.
